Here’s a great tutorial we found for those who are just getting into herbalism and looking for a “way in” to begin the process of making things with herbs – starting with the real living plants that grow (for free!) around us, instead of just grabbing a product off the shelf in the supermarket!

Although store-bought herbal products such as tinctures have benefits such as a certain degree of standardization and quality control, there is much value in learning to prepare herbs yourself.

First of all – it is a survival technique and therefore an incredibly useful aspect of learning survival / off-grid skills. One interesting aspect of this is that many of the plants that are considered beneficial in herbalism are generally considered by others to be weeds and of “no value”! For example, when you learn about dandelions and all the amazing things you can do with them, you will be truly astonished that so many people just want to spray them with poisons and be done with them.

Second, one gets to “tune in” to the plant. Although it might sound like I am being weird or esoteric here, don’t worry, I’m not about to suggest a change of religion or anything. I just mean that when you are working closely with plants, there really is a kind of “sixth sense” that you can develop. You get a feel for the plant – which ones are the most healthy, what the plants need, and even some instinct for the “right” amounts of things.

Working with the plants is also remarkably therapeutic. Tuning in to nature is an amazing thing to spend time doing in general and I really honestly believe that it has a healing effect. Nature has a kind of tranquility to it that you don’t get from the human world. So in short, just by working with the plants and cultivating your observation and awareness, it will have a benefit of its own. One of my dear friends, a “serious” herbalist, gave me some really interesting advice around this. She said, “when you are working with the plants, leave any ‘bad energy’ outside. Be calm around them, focused and attentive.” To start with I was somewhat resistant to this idea – I thought “how can my vibe really make a difference here?” But she persisted, so I started putting this into conscious practice, letting my moods blow away, focusing on being observant… and it turned out to be sage advice which I now hold dear.

    A weed is a plant that no one has yet found a use for, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have one. I predict that the future of medical treatment will be in plant remedies, just as they were in the past. The difference will be that now we have a major communication and information source in the Internet, people will be able to prepare them themselves, but they are going to need to be able to do so safely.

    I would like to know what I could take
    for back pain. I several herbs for pain but none of them tell me how much or how to take them. I am taking Ibuprofin now but do not ant to take this.It is hard on stomach.
    Any info would be much appreciated
