Coconut oil boasts a plethora of health benefits and has become prized not only in the kitchen but by natural beauty enthusiasts, finding a variety of applications in the bathroom. Here are several ways to use coconut oil as a low-cost replacement for bathroom products that often contain harmful chemicals:

1. Lip Balm

Coconut oil acts as a moisturizer to nourish and hydrate chapped lips. A 2004 study [1] published in the journal Dermatitis confirmed the effectiveness of coconut oil as a safe oil when used as a moisturizer.

2. Facial Cleanser

Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties [2] and moisturizing abilities that make it perfect to cleanse your face, using a small amount added to a clean, hot, damp cloth. Say goodbye to manufactured cleansers which contain harmful chemicals.

3. Deodorant

Some traditional deodorants can irritate your skin. You can use coconut oil as an alternative to these products. Research shows that coconut oil has antifungal properties [3] that will help your underarms smell fresh every day.

4. Body Oil

Coconut oil is good for dry skin. Its emollient effects were proven by a study [4] which used the oil to moisturize dryness in an adult with atopic dermatitis. Spots that often get drier include elbows and knees. So, rub the oil on these areas.

5. Oil Pulling

Coconut oil is one of the preferred oils for oil pulling, which is a traditional way to cleanse the mouth of bacteria. One study [5] revealed the effectiveness of oil pulling using coconut oil in treating plague related gingivitis.

6. Hair Treatment

Many will attest to the fact that coconut oil is excellent for hair treatment, especially for dry hair. Coconut oil is an effective moisturizer for the scalp and hair. It also nourishes your hair from inside out. According to a study published in the Journal of Cosmetics Science, [6] coconut oil contains lauric acid that prevents loss of hair proteins which could lead to hair damage.

7. Eye Makeup Remover

You can now remove your makeup without fear of irritating your eyes by using coconut oil which also gives extra hydration to the skin around your eyes. Coconut oil is rich in vitamin E [7] which is essential for fighting wrinkles.

8. Cuticle Treatment

Rugged nails could be tamed by massaging your fingernails and toenails with coconut oil. Fungal infections are also opposed since coconut oil has anti-fungal properties. [8]

9. Body Scrub
