Some people are not aware of the fact that ordinary white vinegar is excellent for cleaning many things. Not only does it do the job really well, but it is really cheap, and natural! So there aren’t the potential toxicity issues of chemical-based cleaners. Vinegar has been used as a cleaning agent – and for many other purposes besides culinary use – since very old times.

White vinegar is also known as distilled vinegar – something of a misnomer because it is not produced by the distillation of vinegar, but by the fermentation of distilled alcohol to give acetic acid, which is then diluted. It is used for medicinal, laboratory, and cleaning purposes – as well as in cooking, baking, meat preservation, and pickling. [1]

Vinegar is a potent disinfectant. One study found that 5% vinegar is 90% effective against mold and 99.9% effective against bacteria. [2]

As you can see, major companies are now branding white vinegar specifically as cleaning vinegar. Apparently, the Heinz product (pictured) is 6% acidic, slightly stronger than the 5% that is considered standard. I’d love to know if there is any other difference between this “cleaning vinegar” and regular white vinegar. If it is a major brand product, check the label to make sure they didn’t add something they shouldn’t have – you know how it goes these days!

There are more uses for vinegar, even, than the ones in the list of 25. Did you know that vinegar can also be used as a rust remover? [2]

As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked.

Even more interesting: The reason why top army officials are not deaf after decades of hearing machine guns, bombs going off and helicopter noises…

Is because they are using something called "the wire method", a simple protocol inspired by a classified surgery on deaf people from the 1950s...

  2. I have used white vinegar for cleaning for some time and as sooner in my wash. I am interested in knowing about vinegar for medicinal purposes such as for uti and much more, could you enlighten us on this topic please.

  3. I tried white vinegar and warm water to soak a couple of towels that I couldn’t get the smell out of after my cat had peed on them.I soaked them for half an hour then put them in the washing machine for an ordinary wash and now no smell at all except for the fresh washing smell.Saved me buying new towels.Vinegar is an awesome cleaner!

  4. Vinegar is great for many things, but if you put it in the dishwasher or washing machine, it will eat and rot the rubber hoses and seals.

  5. Thank you for this post. I have been using vinegar for many years to clean. My Grandma and Mother used it always even in the laundry.

  6. Can you tell how to get rid of gnats ,,,,,,I would appreciate it you have a solution ,,,Thank you

  7. Carol,
A little dish soap mixed with vinegar in a small dish gets rid of fruit flies. The mix may also get rid of gnats! I used Basic H from the Shaklee Home GoGreen product line mixed with vinegar when my chest freezer lost power and thawed all the meat when I wasn’t home for a week! The mix got rid of the SMELL and the fruit flies!

  8. Vinegar is a really good disinfectant to we had a company come in and kill the mold we had in our house. its strong enough to kill the most searious kinds of molds, flu virus, malaria, strong enough to clean up after Meth Labs. It even got rid of the Mouse problem we had! We had a test done after he fogged the house and it came back as clean as can be. Nothing left in the house that wasn’t suppose to be and the good thing is its not poisonous to your pets or Humans.

  9. TO:Loeli Fredrics:
NO, not if it doesn’t just sit there for while. Just running it through will not rot your hoses, only if it is straight or undiluted and it sits there for long periods of time, then it will rot. But since you are running water also, there should be no problem. and since you aren’t doing it on a daily basis, should be fine.

  10. CAN VINEGAR BE USED TO DISINFECT IN DISH WATER??? I HAVE ALWAYS USED BLEACH.
