15 Natural Remedies For Heartburn And Acid RefluxImage – EverydayRoots.com

At some point in their life, many people will experience heartburn. This unpleasant condition is caused by acid reflux, which occurs when the muscle that allows food into the stomach (the lower esophageal sphincter) is too relaxed, allowing stomach acid to rise up the esophagus.

Many people’s first instinct is to seek for prescription medicine or over the counter drugs, however we have found an article which presents 15 alternative / home remedies – together with simple directions for their use! As you can see from the image, baking soda is one of the common remedies. This is because it is alkaline and therefore can counteract the stomach acid.

There are also several herbs and fruits that show potential in relieving the discomforts of acid reflux. These include ginger, almond, banana, apple, chamomile and aloe vera.

Many of these natural remedies work by neutralizing the acidity in the stomach, however Everydayroots.com has also indicated several other interesting tips on how you can prevent acid reflux or heartburn from recurring. Some of these tips include avoidance of cigarettes and alcohol, as well as maintaining a healthy weight level. Studies show that being obese or overweight increases one’s susceptibility to heartburn. Also, nicotine and alcohol may worsen heartburn significantly.

Wearing of tight-fitting clothes around the midriff is also not recommended for people suffering from recurring acid reflux, because it can put more pressure on the stomach. Other non-herbal remedies include apple cider vinegar and chewing sugar-free gum. And one more tip, don’t eat right before laying down to sleep. This would only allow the stomach acid to move back into your esophagus more easily.

I’m a GI nurse, while these remedies work for a while, if a person has reflux consistently and for a period of time, may need to be on an over the counter medication that is stronger. Long term reflux can have damage to the esophagus that should be evaluated by a doctor.

I am on medication for my heart and a number of other conditions all of which give me reflux and i refuse to put any more chem icals into my body. Thankyou.

Natural remedies are the best, those over the counter remedies come with lots of side effects. If you stop eating certain acidic foods and drink ginger and Aloe Vera daily you will not have a need for otc medications.

I find that the diet, how much and not too late are the key factors. I’ve been suffering for 5 years now. Bananas and oatmeal help when I’m having a bout. Lots of water also.

  • By GERD, September 15, 2015 @ 11:21 am

Since I am on the subject of diet…it is important to recognize that obesity is one
of the biggest contributors to GERD. It also safeguards the abdomen from the injury generated by
the acid. At night the body is relaxed, which also relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter or LES.
