We discovered a super tutorial from Jillee at OneGoodThingByJillee about how to clean old stained pillows and actually get them white again. It’s good and simple but she does it right. Lots of great feedback from people saying that the method worked for them!
Pillows basically get yellow after time and ordinary tactics may “clean” them but don’t remove the stain. It’s unsightly and so many people just give in and buy new pillows.
One of the “secret weapons” here is the use of extra hot water. Jillee adds a couple of pans of boiling water to the mix to get the temperature up higher than just the regular hot water setting.
Another important tip here is to wash two pillows at a time. If you’ve ever tried washing just one pillow at a time, you’ll know why: The off-balance load of a heavy, wet pillow makes the machine go crazy during the spin – and at the least will make a real racket, but at worst could damage the machine. Putting two pillows in on opposite sides balances the load and keeps things sane.
It’s also important to agitate the pillows for a long period, so it’s good to use the “heavy” setting.
One thing about this tutorial that some will dislike is that it calls for the use of bleach. However, it is completely possible to use a natural bleach alternative. Bleach is nasty stuff and can be an ecological hazard as well as a dangerous chemical to have around the home.
