Though often considered as a vegetable, the tomato is actually a fruit – and it can be classified as part of the citrus family because it is pulpy and its seeds are edible! Probably one of the most and popular fruits today, (maybe we should call it a “vruit”?) tomatoes are known to provide a wonderful string of health benefits to the human body.

In the arena of nutrition, tomatoes are best known for their lycopene content, which has been found to be good for the heart. Through the years, there have been an increasing number of scientific studies conducted to determine the effects of lycopene for the heart. Majority of the results of those studies concluded that lycopene plays a vital role in preventing the onset of cardiovascular diseases and in promoting heart health.

Also, lycopenes play vital roles in preventing the development of certain types of cancer like lung, pancreatic, endometrial, breast, prostate and colorectal cancers. Tomatoes are also excellent sources of antioxidants which are believed to be useful in neutralizing the effects of free radicals. If left uncontrolled, these free radicals may trigger the escalation and development of numerous serious conditions – such as diabetes, colon cancer, asthma, cognitive dysfunction, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, inflammation, thrombosis, atherosclerosis and other chronic degenerative diseases.

Furthermore, this fruit is an excellent reservoir of fiber which is now thought to be effective in preventing colon cancer, in lowering the level of bad cholesterol as well as in optimizing the level of sugar in the blood. Tomatoes also contain a powerful blend of nutrients like niacin, potassium, Vitamin B6, folate, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and carotenoids.

With these health benefits, growing your own tomatoes can be seen as a worthwhile endeavor. But there’s more – aside from the health benefits, you get the same heirloom quality the following season without spending any more money.

(No wonder big agribusiness in the EU wants to be rid of heirloom varieties. Don’t let them get away with it!)

  1. Citrus seeds are not edible. Berries have edible seeds and my research tells me tomatoesare berries, not citrus.

  2. I enjoyed the information here. Weather a tomato is a citrus or a berry family as a fruit it doesn’t matter or change a thing. They are still a tomato, very good and a lot of health benefits. Thanks for info.

  3. Krystal, berries are a type of fruit, one of the simplest. This article is incorrect in stating tomatoes are in the citrus family, tomatoes are unrelated and belong in the the nightshade family (solanaceae), which includes several commonly known plants such as eggplant, pepper, deadly nightshade, and tobacco. Tomatoes were declared as vegetables in the late 19th century by the U.S. government, but the did not reclassify the fruit botanically as a vegetable.
