Salad is supposed to be one of the quintessential healthy meals. Low in calories, bursting with freshness and full of nutrition.



So it stands to reason that your salad dressing ought to consist also of only healthy ingredients and nothing else.



However there has been an alarming trend in recent years: Premade salad dressings with all manner of artificial additives and questionable ingredients. Here are some facts you should know:

1. Many store-bought salad dressings contain fairly significant amounts of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Unless you’re in a health food store, it’s almost impossible to find a salad dressing that doesn’t contain large amounts of HFCS.

2. Almost all store-bought salad dressings contain heavily refined soybean oil and/or refined canola oil… both of which are VERY unhealthy.

3. Many store-bought salad dressings contain numerous additional artificial additives – including monosodium glutamate, colors such as yellow 6 and yellow 5, propylene glycol alginate and more. More on artificial food coloring here.



Sorry to be blunt, but these products, marketed as “low fat” and therefore “healthy”, are in fact a chemical sh*t storm. As a general rule of thumb, if you see the words “low fat”, run. It’s also worth noting that scientists have now demonstrated that sugar is the main culprit in weight gain, not fat.

Here are two simple recipes for awesome all natural (genuinely) and super healthful salad dressings:

1. Garlic Ginger Lemon Salad Dressing

Ingredients:
2 cloves of garlic
1 small thumb size piece of ginger
Juice of 1 lemon
1/4 cup of olive oil

Directions:
1. Mince the garlic and ginger as finely as possible
2. In a bowl combine all ingredients
3. Pour over salad

Additions and variations – can you think of more? 🙂
+ ADD honey if you want it sweet!
+ ADD cayenne pepper to make it spicy!
+ ADD turmeric for an extra cleanse!
+ ADD 1 avocado mashed for a CREAMY DRESSING!
+ ADD nutritional yeast for a ‘cheesy’ tasting salad!

    I use vinegar & add herbs like rosemary, tarragon, thyme, basil, oregano let it set for a couple days, then pour some on salad, then add evoo, sesame oil,grapeseed oil.
