If you’re concerned about the use of potentially toxic or carcinogenic solvents such as those used in some adhesive remover products, then you’ll be sure to appreciate the natural formula we just found to do the job! The link to the tutorial follows after our introduction to the topic.
The formula uses only three ingredients – coconut oil (or other vegetable oil) and baking soda plus a few drops of orange essential oil which not only apparently adds “grease cutting power” but will add a pleasing orangey fragrance.
I’m uncomfortable with using chemical solvents and don’t trust them. Many years ago in my late teens (I was young and needed the money) I worked in a chemical factory that made solvent based adhesives for the shoe industry. It was one of the few available jobs in the crappy town that I lived in, so I took it. One of the rooms in the factory was the “solvent room” and the people who worked in there were all noticeably crazier than the workers in the other parts of the factory. I think they may have been permanently high from the ever-present fumes! One of them I clearly remember used to carry a broom around while he worked and pretended it was a guitar, rocking out wildly even though there wasn’t actually any music playing at the time. Maybe they were just attempting to alleviate the tedium – but I’m fairly convinced that the solvents were affecting them and that life-span of workers in that factory would have been shorter than the average: All workers used to have monthly health checks to ascertain whether the chemicals were messing us up. I got out of there as soon as I could but there were many there who carried on for many years.
For those who are still uncertain as to why not just buy a product off the shelf to do the job – here’s some actual info. Typical solvent-based goo-remover products may contain ethanol (alcohol), xylene, acetone, toluene, methanol and / or other solvents. Xylene is actually quite nasty stuff and the Xylene MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) states “Contact may cause eye, skin and mucous membrane irritation. Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors or mists. Inhalation may cause irritation, anesthetic effects (dizziness, nausea, headache, intoxication), and respiratory system effects. Excessive exposure may affect the liver and kidneys.”
The Toluene MSDS states that “The substance may be toxic to blood, kidneys, the nervous system, liver, brain, central nervous system (CNS). Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.”
I could go on but I think you get the point: Make your own easy and cheap solvent-free goo remover and you just removed a potential health hazard from your life…
