Research shows that this fruit is an excellent source of micronutrients like manganese, dietary fiber, Vitamin C, flavonoids, antioxidants, phosphorus, potassium, carotenoids, B-complex, copper, Vitamin E, selenium, iron, zinc, and Vitamin K.

Blueberries are also one of the richest natural sources of anthocyanins. Research on these compounds reveal that they play a vital role in reducing one’s risk for inflammation and cancer as well. Also, anthocyanins are thought to boost the body’s immune system and offer protection against infections and bacterial and viral communicable diseases like flu, colds, and fever. Did you know that blueberries are also good for the eyes? Yes, its true. The anthocyanosides are thought to help in slowing down vision loss, playing a role in delaying or preventing the development of eye-related conditions like cataract, myopia, dryness, hypermetropia and macular degeneration.

Some studies have further revealed that regular intake of blueberries may have profound effects to the heart. A study conducted at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center suggests that blueberries significantly reduce the risk factors for metabolic disorders and cardiovascular illnesses. The fruit actually contains compounds that trigger an increased production of nitric oxide which positively affects blood pressure. Furthermore, it helps in lowering lipid levels and cholesterol which results to improved heart health.

One ultra important thing to be on the look out for: Read the label carefully on muffins, cereals and cakes that are described as containing blueberries, to make sure that they are real and not artificial. I’m serious! Look at the label, and be aware of wording such as “blueberry bits”. If you see this – be aware that “blueberry bits” are a trade name for a concoction of sugars, oils, artificial flavors and food coloring and (get this) don’t actually contain ANY blueberry whatsoever!
