We discovered a great tutorial for how to make your own “fizzy cleaning toilet bombs”! I have to say, this has immediate appeal as anything that diminishes scrubbing the bowl gets my vote. As an added bonus – it’s a lot more eco friendly than using chemical-based cleaners.
There’s something a little idea amusing about this whole idea. Partly I think it is the fact that you can toss something down there and forget it for a while, but also it might be just the phrase “toilet bombs”… I can just see the marketing angle: “After you’ve let one off, let one off.”
Ok but seriously. What’s great about this is that is an all-natural formula using just essential oils, baking soda and citric acid. Citric acid provides the fizz and also attacks hard water stains, which are alkaline in nature.
I would much rather use this than bleach, for example. Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is nasty stuff. Not only is it a highly toxic chemical to have around the house, but there is also some argument over whether it releases poisonous chlorine or chloramine fumes if it comes into contact with urine. In other words, it’s less than ideal! It also harms wildlife if it gets into the environment. So this natural alternative is more eco-friendly as well as more health-friendly. One thing to note – some people have asked where to find citric acid. It’s available at grocery store, “in the baking aisle next to canning supplies”.
