Rust is the oxide of iron and is produced when iron is exposed to air (oxygen) and moisture (or acids). Pure iron is unstable – and given enough time it will eventually turn completely to rust, which as we know is flaky, crumbly and useless in terms of strength and durability. The creation of rust aided by moisture and is dramatically accelerated by the presence of salt – and can be prevented (at least for a while) by sealing the iron away from the atmosphere, for example with a layer of non-porous paint. There are also special steels – such as stainless steel – which are rust resistant due to the protective action of the other metals in the mix – notably chromium.
Our good friends over at Nature Hacks have an interesting page all about natural / readily available home items that can act as rust removers. These can make a cost effective alternative to either expensive products or the replacement of the rusty item So why not give them a whirl?
