Millions of people suffer from allergy to pollen. I have been sneezing every day the past couple of months, and feel as though I have had a sore throat most of the time. Our friends over at Common Sense Home have a great page all about home remedies for allergies – including herbs, natural antihistamines, dietary changes, supplements and of course good old local raw honey. Local raw honey has been considered beneficial for allergies for a long time – something to do with the fact that the presence of local pollen helps the body to develop a tolerance to it, instead of seeing it as some kind of foreign pollutant.
One important thing I need to add to the list – look into HEPA air filtration. HEPA filter air purifiers are highly regarded as the best way to remove particles from the air, including pollen, dust and mold. With the air cleaned of these particles, breathing should be easier for all and there will simply be less irritants to bother you. Other forms of filtration – for example air ionizers – have been shown to be less effective. HEPA technology is used by NASA for their cleanrooms – and if it is good enough for them, that’s good enough for me!
Many of the good quality HEPA filter air purifiers can run to hundreds of dollars – but there are various “low tech” ways to make your own. You can even build a “low tech” air purifier that consists of a 20″ inline filter square taped to a standard box fan. These actually work surprisingly well and cost a fraction of their expensive counterparts!
